About

Inspired by Dr. Richard Thain‘s work to defend his fundamental human right to the freedom of expression, HumanistFreedoms.com was created in 2019 to celebrate contemporary applied humanism. Each year since then, the website has continued modest but continuous growth and was recognized in 2022 and 2025 as one of the Top 15 Humanist blogs in the world.

We publish news blog features news, essays, criticism and commentary about contemporary applied humanism and humanist history. We celebrate our common humanity.

Our logo is a stylized version of the “Happy Human” logo that is common to many humanist organizations around the world. Our version has multiple happy human characters to demonstrate that there is significant diversity within humanism and that humanism continues to grow. The logo features green to establish that humanism must be deeply connected to nature and global ecology.

In 2023, we refined our focus to include the history of humanism in Canada. We changed our name to Humanist Heritage Canada. As Humanist Heritage Canada, we will be documenting and telling the stories of humanism in Canada and from a Canadian perspective.

Our Inspiration

Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Societies that stress uniqueness and individuality and that provide fertile terrain for friendship based on the personal and specific can actually be where our common humanity is more easily recognized.

Nicholas A. Christakis

Recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world.
