World Humanism Day

Inspired by the Township of Russell’s demonstrated celebration of diversity in that community, Humanist Heritage Canada offers the following declaration for Canadian humanists to submit to their community leaders for promotion. Humanism is, after all, universalist and inclusive. If the government can promote one perspective, it can promote them all.

World Humanism Day Statement

On June 21 we celebrate World Humanism Day and acknowledge the importance of compassion, empathy, and kindness in our daily lives. This day serves as a reminder of the values and priorities that unite us as human beings, regardless of our cultural or socio-economic backgrounds.

The Power of Human Connection

Humanism is built on the principles of mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation. It encourages us to look beyond our differences and focus on the common good. By embracing humanism, we foster a more inclusive and compassionate society, where everyone has the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape their own lives.

Statistics Canada says that 34.6% of Canadians report secular and non-religious status. In a community of 20,000 people, at least 7,000 know that they are good without a god…and better without a religion!

Celebrating Humanism

World Humanism Day is an opportunity to reflect on the impact of an ethics based on human and natural values in a spirit of reason and free inquiry. It is a time to celebrate the achievements of humanists and to recognize the contributions of individuals and organizations working towards a more humane and equitable world.

World Humanist Day is celebrated on June 21, the summer solstice, as a symbolic recognition of universal human experience.

Secular Humanist individuals and organizations host spaghetti suppers and community friendship gatherings providing opportunities for humanists to come together in the fellowship of freedom from supernatural superstitions. Remember, you don’t have to wear a colander to enjoy a plate of pasta!

A Call to Action

The Township of XXX recognizes and respects the commitment and dedication of our secular, humanist, atheist and agnostic residents during this universally shared time and extends warm wishes of peace and freedom on June 21.

As we mark World Humanism Day, we urge everyone to join us in promoting the values of humanism. Let us strive to create a world where everyone has access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Let us work towards a future where human rights and freedoms are respected and protected, and where everyone can live with dignity and respect.
